The Clarke House and The Glessner House

Works to create jobs for local residents through its economic development unit. It has also worked since the closing of the stockyards in 1971 to redevelop the industrial job base for the community. The BYNC also has programs for teens, counseling services, GED and ESL classes, job placement, outreach programs to senior citizens, and is a resource for residents when they are in need.

Chicago Anti-Bashing Network
Formed in response to three September '98 anti-gay bashings in Chicago’s "Boy's Town" neighborhood (and the Matthew Shepard murder in Wyoming), the CABN was formed to protest the polititcal climate which encourages discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual persons.  They form marches and vigils, via a phone tree, whenever hate crimes occur.

Chicago Metropolitan Sports Association
 One of the largest social organizations in the Midwest with a mission to provide the  Chicago area Lesbigay community with activities and events that foster friendship,  sportsmanship, and camaraderie in a safe environment.

Chicago Reporter
The Chicago Reporter was established in 1972 as a means of disseminating information about race and poverty in Chicago.  Used by legislators, policy makers, academics and individuals nationwide, the Reporter continues to break the news and influence the agenda in Chicago.  The Reporter is a publication of the Community Renewal Society.

Chicago Urban League

George Rogers Clark School serves the "Island" (i.e. surrounded by an expressway and factories) part of the Austin community and is part of the South Austin Magnet Cluster (with an emphasis on Performing and Fine Arts).  It is a small school (400 students in grades Kindergarten through 8th); it is racially diverse (6% white, 57% black, 37% hispanic); 85% of its students are low-income; and 13% of its students are English-language deficient.

Morgan Park High School
is recognized as one of the top five high schools in the city of Chicago, and is the highest rated general admission high school in the city.  It is known state-wide for its sports, and recently began an international baccalaureate program.  Racially, 83% of its students are black, 12% white, 4% hispanic, and 1% Asian.  44% of its teachers have at least a masters degree.  It is part of the Chicago Public Schools.

History

Black Metropolis History Project
Project involving direct interviewing with community leaders and other history makers about the Black Metropolis, the largest and oldest African American community in Chicago.

Chicago Historical Society
The Chicago Historical Society is a privately endowed, independent institution devoted to collecting, interpreting, and presenting the rich multicultural history of Chicago and Illinois (at present they have over 20 million photographs, documents, and artifacts relating to Chicago), as well as selected areas of American history, to the public through exhibitions, programs, research collections, and publications.

The Clarke House and The Glessner House
The Prarie Avenue Historic District contains homes that have existed in Chicago for over a century.  At the beginning of the 1900’s, Chicago's Prairie Avenue was called "Millionaire's Row," and Victorian-style homes lined the street. The one exception was the “stone fortress” belonging to wealthy businessman John Jacob Glessner.  Chicago’s oldest house, the Clarke House, is also located here.

DuSable Museum of African American History

The Chicago Reporter was established in 1972 as a means of disseminating information about race and poverty in Chicago.  Used by legislators, policy makers, academics and individuals nationwide, the Reporter continues to break the news and influence the agenda in Chicago.  The Reporter is a publication of the Community Renewal Society.

Chinese Mutual Aid Association
The CMAA, first begun in 1981 in response to refugees from Vietnam of Chinese origin, helps recent Chinese immigrants and refugees by sponsoring literacy, employment training and community organizing projects.  There are also seniors program, adjustment and counseling services, Chinese language school and Chinese art classes for children.

 Boys and Girls Club serving the community of Robert Taylor Project Development  (the largest public housing development in the nation, and the second poorest  community in the U.S.) The Boys and Girls Club offers cooking classes, tutoring,  computer training, library time, sports, arts, crafts, peer mentoring and a wide  variety of programming.

Sarah’s Circle
 Drop-in center that offers a welcoming, supportive, non-intrusive, safe haven for  women who are homeless or of low-income. Also offers a variety of free services  and activities.

Sherwood Conservatory of Music
 Community music school that provides programs for people from birth to as old as  you want to be.

Southeast Asia Center
 Social service organization dedicated to providing service to Vietnamese, Chinese,  Thai and Laotian immigrants, including day care and English classes.

Southeast Regional Department on Aging - Atlas Center
 Facility for the elderly. Services includes a meal program, entertainment, arts and  crafts,  weight rooms, pool, checkers, etc.

 Social work community organization.

Southwest Youth Service Collaborative
Provides many programs for young people including a rap/hip-hop program, Miranda rights education, soccer, Girl Power,

St. Leonard’s House for Ex-Offenders
 Episcopal Charities organization that houses 40 ex-offenders who stay from their  release from the prison system up to 4 months. Programs help residents with  recovery programs, low income housing, employment and possible educational  opportunities.

Apna Ghar
 Social service organization providing education and  services concerning domestic violence. Includes awareness  workshops in public schools, shelter, resources, training,  etc., serving predominantly the Southeast Asian  community.

Chicago Abused Women Coalition/Greenhouse
 Founded in 1977, CAWC established Chicago's first 24-hour domestic violence hotline and opened Greenhouse Shelter, Chicago's first safe refuge for battered women and their children. CAWC's keystone programs and services continue to provide comprehensive life-saving assistance to over 1,000 women and children each year. In addition, CAWC has become known for innovative model programs and partnerships

Deborah’s Place
 Serves women who are 18 and older who are homeless. Services include overnight  shelter, daytime support, second stage housing, transitional shelter, supportive  permanent housing, case management, therapeutic services, education and skills  development.

Family Rescue
 Domestic violence program with emergency shelter, outreach/prevention program,  counseling, transitional housing with 22 apartments, day care center, 24 hour crisis  center and speakers bureau.

Genesis House
 Social service agency that helps women who have been involved in prostitution.  There  are three locations, two drop-in centers, two food pantries, clean needle  exchange, some health care, court outreach, street outreach, HIV program, living  program and career services.

American Indian Health Service
 Non-profit organization administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs that provides a  clinic, health services, and prevention programs along with after school programs for  children.

American Lung Association - “Open Airways”
 Provides in-school instruction to children on asthma management skills. The “Open  Airways” program is a six week curriculum that takes place throughout the Chicago  Metropolitan area.

Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra

ChildServ is a non-profit, private child welfare agency that helps children and their families build better lives.  Their wide range of programs and services, for over 4000 children,  include daycare, tutoring, foster care and adoption, early childhood education and parenting support.

Children's Memorial Hospital
Since its founding in 1882, the mission and vision of Children's Memorial Hospital has single-mindedly focused on the needs of children and their families.  CMH specializes in pediatric care, research into the diseases which affect children, education for physicians and nurses (it is the main facility for Northwestern Med School), and advocacy for children.

Children’s Place
 Mission is to improve the quality of life for children and their families who are  affected by HIV/AIDS or other life-threatening or serious health conditions. The  core program is a 10 bed residential facility that provides short-term care and  housing for children who have been separated from their homes.

Chinese Mutual Aid Association
The CMAA, first begun in 1981 in response to refugees from Vietnam of Chinese origin, helps recent Chinese immigrants and refugees by sponsoring literacy, employment training and community organizing projects.  There are also seniors program, adjustment and counseling services, Chinese language school and Chinese art classes for children.

Community Television Network
 Empowers low-income children and young adults by teaching them the use of  media  arts through video instruction classes. Students produce, with the  supervision of the educators, “Hard Cover”; a cable access TV show.
